Waking up with a feeling of still being tired, many have experienced this sensation. But then how do you know what the ideal length of time is for a good night’s sleep.

First of all, it is important to remember that every human is different and that this difference is also valid for sleep. Between heavy sleepers, late sleepers, early risers, everyone has a sleep rhythm with their little habits.

Needs in general:

From adult: between 7 and 9 hours

From the teenager: between 8 and 10 hours

– From the child from 6 years old: between 9 and 12 hours

– From the elderly: The duration is random and can be shortened. Seniors have a more fragmented sleep pattern and are therefore more prone to sleep disorders.

According to one study, the average sleep time of an adult is 6 hours 42 minutes. Either a result below the recommended average. But then again, it all depends on everyone’s needs. There are big and small sleepers, and everyone has to adapt to their work and family life schedules.

If there is no ready-made answer as to how long a night’s sleep should last, it is very important to know your needs. If you don’t know your needs yet, don’t hesitate to test them by changing the length of your nights. Try to go to bed later, get up earlier, etc… Observe your shape when you wake up and ask yourself the right questions (Am I productive, attentive, in a good mood and rested when I sleep x number of hours? Or on the contrary, do I need more hours of sleep? Am I tired when I wake up? On weekends or during the holidays, after how many hours of sleep do, I wake up spontaneously? etc.).

Based on your answers you will be better able to choose the sleep duration that really suits you. It is best to do these tests during holiday periods, when you can appreciate your needs and adapt to them.

Naps?

Even if you know your needs, you may feel a little tired during the day, often after lunch. It’s normal, your stomach is digesting.

But then do you have to take a nap in a hostel bunk bed or at home if you feel like it? The answer is YES.

However, we must be careful not to stay in Morpheus’ arms too long. Count 30 minutes maximum, in the early afternoon. This period generally corresponds to the digestion phase, the one in which a decrease in attention can be observed. Too much rest at the end of the day could prevent or delay your falling asleep in the evening.

Beware, we must keep in mind that we don’t take a nap to recuperate from a bad night’s sleep, because sleep doesn’t catch up. Be aware that in order to avoid tiredness, large deviations should be avoided. The secret of a rested body is regularity!
